Dental implants are quickly becoming the most preferred and accepted treatment option for replacing missing/non-restorable teeth and can also be used to support a dental prosthesis like a denture.
Unlike a bridge, dental implants do not require loss of healthy tooth structure through the preparation of the adjacent teeth. Dental implants have revolutionized the cosmetic and restorative options for patients with missing teeth.
It is now possible for patients to regain the esthetics and even the feel and function they once had with their natural teeth. Although dental bridges and removable dentures are still effective options here are some of the benefits dental implants have to offer.
no damage to adjacent teeth
normal oral hygiene care (easy to floss and brush like a natural tooth)
maintains bone and gums in the area
predictable outcomes and limited risk
superior esthetic results
Dental Implant Procedure
Great candidates for implants are patients who are missing teeth and who also have sufficient bone density at the site where the implants are to be placed.
Determining whether a patient fits the requirements for implant treatment is done at the initial consultation. After the initial consultation, special images of the jaw bone called a Cone Beam CT scan will be collected and often guides for implant placement will be fabricated. Once the implant specialist is ready to begin treatment and the patient is fully numb a small titanium rod will be placed through the gums and into the bone.
After the implant is placed a few months are required to let the bone heal and fully integrate with the titanium implant. During the healing time a temporary tooth can often be fabricated to help with esthetics. Once the healing is completed Dr. Mee will initiate the steps necessary for crown fabrication to cover the implant.
